While most parts of the country have experienced declines in manufacturing, Lancaster has not only maintained its manufacturing base, but has seen it grow over the years. Representing nearly 30% of the workforce, manufacturing employs over 56,000 people in the county. The service industry has also grown dramatically, employing nearly 135,000, mostly to accommodate the tourism industry. This continuous rise in business is offset by the rural countryside, home to a large population of Amish and a much simpler style of life.
