What was once an isolated farming area boomed in the late 1800s as thousands of European immigrants flocked to the Wyoming Valley to mine anthracite. Next came the silk and garment companies, some of which are still in operation today. But as King Coal left the region, Wilkes-Barre shifted gears to industries such as health care and telecommunications. |
