[]  Joseph Shelby and Todd Bartos Present on Minimizing Risk and Rewarding Excellence
at the American Academy of Medical Management Conference and other Venues


LANCASTER, PA, November 20, 2009 – Joseph D. Shelby and Todd R. Bartos, shareholders of Stevens & Lee, discussed minimizing risk within medical practices at the American Academy of Medical Management (AAMM) in Las Vegas, NV, November 9-13, 2009. Mr. Bartos also addressed to the Michigan Bariatric Society in Ann Arbor, Michigan, November 13, 2009.
Mr. Shelby presented “Minimizing the Risks of Litigation and Liability When Discharging Employees” to the Executive Academy for Practice Administrators tract at the AAMM conference.

Mr. Bartos presented “Medical Malpractice - Protecting Your Tail,” “EMR in 2009-2010: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly” and “Disruptive Behavior and Risk Mitigation” to the Executive Academy for Practice Administrators and the Practice Management Intensive Training tracts at the AAMM.

Mr. Bartos also presented “Rewarding Excellence and Protecting Your Bariatric Surgery Practice” to the Michigan Bariatric Society. 

Joseph D. Shelby’s practice includes labor and employment law and litigation involving labor and employment issues. He represents management in human resources and employment issues, including discrimination, harassment and wrongful discharge matters. Mr. Shelby counsels employers in the creation and application of workplace policies, including leaves of absence, EEO, FMLA, FLSA, discrimination and harassment policies.

Mr. Shelby counsels practice administrators and others in the human resources areas. His representation of clients in this industry includes professional medical and dental practices, acute care hospitals and long-term acute care facilities.

Mr. Shelby has conducted numerous training sessions for clients, most recently on sexual harassment for supervisors and a separate training session for non-supervisory employees. He has also recently conducted a number of training sessions for supervisors on the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Mr. Shelby received a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Gettysburg College.

Todd R. Bartos concentrates his practice in health care litigation and risk mitigation. He works with physicians on risk management issues and is a defense trial lawyer focused exclusively on protecting the rights of health care providers in state and federal courts and administrative agencies. In addition to his trial work, Mr. Bartos lectures on risk management, issues of patient involvement and accountability, patient satisfaction and informed consent issues in the private practice, acute care hospital, post-acute care and long-term care settings. He has also published several articles and book chapters dealing with risk management issues, physician liability and electronic medical records.

Mr. Bartos holds a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College.
