Q: How long is the Summer Associate Program?
A: The program typically runs 10 to 12 weeks.

Q: What is the standard workload for summer associates?
A: Like any of our attorneys, our summer associates are expected to contribute enough time to get the job done for our clients.

Q: What kind of work can a summer associate expect to do?
A: Our summer associates get real work on real cases. We make every effort to introduce our summer associates to a variety of lawyers, practice groups, industry focus groups and clients.

Q: How much money do summer associates make?
A: First year summer associates make $1,900 per week, plus a signing bonus of $750 and a starting bonus of $750. Second year summer associates earn $2,100 per week and receive a $1,000 signing bonus and a $1,000 starting bonus.

Q: Do you reimburse summer associates for travel expenses?
A: Yes. We pay for your interview travel expenses and job-related travel. Daily travel to and from the office is not reimbursed.

Q: How many students from the summer program can expect to receive offers of employment?
A: We hire summer associates with the expectation that an offer will be made to each upon conclusion of the program and the large majority of them do get offers. It is our intention to offer a position within the firm to every summer associate whom our lawyers believe will meet our requirements of excellence and eventually become a shareholder.

Q: What is the starting salary for a first year associate at Stevens & Lee?
A: Our first year associates make a minimum of $127,000, including base salary, a guaranteed bonus and a firm contribution of 10% of total compensation (salary plus bonus) to a tax-advantaged savings plan. We also offer one of the best individual and family benefit packages in the industry, without any premium co-pay.

Q: What are the criteria for associate bonuses?
A: Productivity expressed quantitatively based on the number of hours you work and qualitatively based on the perceptions of other lawyers of your professional development. We also pay associates 10% of each dollar collected for new business originated by that associate and a significant additional bonus for helping us recruit new lawyers and support staff.

Q: What does your benefit package include?
A: We believe Stevens & Lee has one of the best benefit packages in the industry. Benefits include: 

  • Full Blue Cross/Blue Shield basic and major medical (including prescription drugs) health plan for lawyers and their families (subject to coordination with other coverage) fully paid by the firm (no current employee premium co-pay). Dental and vision coverage is available for purchase at group rates. 
  • 10% (salary plus bonus) annual contribution to funded pension plan fully paid by the firm (no employee contribution) 
  • Life and long-term disability insurance fully paid by the firm (no employee premium co-pay) 
  • Voluntary 401(k) retirement plan 
  • Tuition reimbursement program 
  • Malpractice insurance 
  • State and local bar association dues 
  • State and local license fees 

Q: Do you pay for CLE and other educational programs?
A:
Yes. We pay for all mandatory continuing legal education programs and other programs designed to aid in the professional development of our lawyers. We also encourage our lawyers to continue their formal educations, particularly in programs toward LL.M.s and MBAs, and reimburse them for successful completion of their courses. Ongoing technology-related training is also available through the firm.
