Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Issues Elective Medical Services Recommendations

On April 7, 2020, CMS issued new recommendations for non-emergent elective medical services in response to the ongoing surge of acute care COVID-19 patients. In recognition of the need to conserve health care resources, relieve the increasing burden on providers, and improve safety, CMS urged providers to utilize a tiered framework to prioritize care and conserve resources for timely treatment of emergent patients.

Additionally, CMS noted that providers should consider expansion of capacity to better manage the increased demand for emergent care.
