State and Local Tax

Our State and Local Tax Group represents clients across the country in state tax controversies before state revenue departments, administrative appeals boards and state trial and appellate courts. We also advise clients on the effect of state taxes on their operations and business structure as well as on the state tax implications of mergers, acquisitions and restructurings.

We have represented a broad range of clients, from Fortune 500 institutions and start-up companies to pass-through entities and high net worth individuals. Our representations span key brands and industry leaders in the pharmaceutical, electronic commerce, manufacturing, communications, information technology, energy and financial sectors.

Clients rely on our knowledge and skill in navigating all areas of state and local taxation, including:

  • Corporate income and franchise
  • Sales and use
  • Gross receipts
  • Real estate
  • Realty transfer
  • Unemployment compensation
  • Unclaimed property (escheats)
  • Personal income taxes

We also have extensive experience assisting clients in applying for and navigating state incentive and tax credit programs.

Our approach is pragmatic and solution-oriented. We seek to resolve state tax controversies as cost effectively as possible by working with state revenue departments on audit, pursuing administrative appeals and negotiating settlements. We are able to find favorable approaches and solutions for our clients based on our in-depth knowledge of state tax laws and our extensive experience with state revenue departments. However, if a dispute is unable to be easily resolved, we have the ability to effectively litigate state tax matters by guiding our clients through the procedural and strategic aspects of litigation including discovery, document production, depositions, motions for summary judgment, trials and appeals.

Our team has decades of experience with complex state tax audits, controversy and litigation in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and across the country. Although we have advised clients on their state tax issues on a multistate basis, our guidance is often national in scope. The breadth of our skill and understanding leads clients to entrust us with their most important and significant state tax controversies and issues.

Having worked at state revenue departments, Fortune 500 companies, Big Four accounting firms, state legislative branches and other major law firms, we leverage our diverse professional backgrounds for our clients’ benefit. This experience allows us to work seamlessly with corporate tax and legal departments, accounting firms and state revenue departments to help obtain the best possible results for our clients.

As thought leaders in our field, we frequently speak on the latest developments in state taxation for organizations like the Council on State Taxation, the Institute of Professionals in Taxation, the Tax Executives Institute, the New York University State and Local Tax Symposium, the American Bar Association and various state bar and accounting associations, and our attorneys have published articles in national state tax publications.
